Police in Ecuador have launched a massive manhunt for Jose Adolfo Macias, the leader of the Los Choneros criminal organization, after he vanished from a maximum-security facility in Guayaquil.

Macias, also known as “Fito,” was serving a 34-year sentence for drug trafficking and murder.

The escape prompted a large-scale intervention involving over 3,000 law enforcement personnel.

Macias was moved to the maximum-security facility after the assassination of presidential candidate Fernando Villavicencio, who had accused Los Choneros and Macías of threatening him and his campaign team.

“Here I am showing my face. I’m not scared of them,” Villavicencio said.
